Nilu’nen Ktaqmkuk | Ktaqmkuk Life Givers

DecEMBER 5 - FEBRUARY 1

Opening Reception

Thursday, December 5, 2024

7:00 to 9:00 PM

  • A solo exhibition by Jerry Evans, curated by Emily Critch

  • A student response exhibition by the ENVP6528 Mi’kmaw Perspectives on Sustainability class, curated by course instructor Avery Velez

  • An exhibition of prints and materials from the Printshop in a Box public programming.

On December 5, 2024, the Grenfell Art Gallery is pleased to open three exhibitions: Nilu’nen Ktaqmkuk – Ktaqmkuk Life Givers, a solo exhibition by Jerry Evans, curated by Emily Critch; Nikuti’kw: Growing Together, a response exhibition by the ENVP6528 Mi’kmaw Perspectives on Sustainability class, curated by course instructor Avery Velez; and Printshop in a Box, an exhibition of prints and materials from the Printshop in a Box public programming.

These distinct exhibitions sit in conversation to one another. Incorporating elements of Mi’kmaw visual culture in Ktaqmkuk (the Mi'kmaw word for Newfoundland) Evans’ work considers the inter-territorial relationships between people, animals, land and sea - tying into the themes of the ENVP6528 class responses, and the critical importance of community printmaking spaces, as offered by the Printshop in a Box programming.

Mi'kmaw Perspectives on Sustainability Panel Discussion

December 5, 7:30 - 8:30 pm

As part of the opening night, we are pleased to host a panel discussion with students in the Mi'kmaw Perspectives on Sustainability class as they reflect on their participation in the course and reflect on their creative work in the exhibition.

Nilu’nen Ktaqmkuk | Ktaqmkuk Life Givers, a solo exhibition by Jerry Evans, offers an assemblage of prints and mixed media works on paper that coalesce customary geometric motifs and designs present in Mi’kmaw visual culture with detailed renderings of our more-than-human relations. Evans uses print media and mark making as a method of L’nu storytelling to animate our enduring relationships and responsibilities to animal kin, land, and water. This exhibition weaves together threads of seasonal change, life cycles, food sovereignty, land based knowledge, and the importance of life givers that sustain us here in Ktaqmkuk and Mi’kma’ki for the next seven generations.
